What does Fakik lens mean ?

This terms refers to the operation where a lens, as thin as the contact lenses is implanted in the eye. With the help of the lens implanted in front of the our biological lens, we do not need to use eye glasses any more. These lenses will remain in the eye for all life and they do not need to be removed or re-placed in daily life or any speacial care. It is also absulately not possible to be irritated by feeling these lenses. 

Fakik lenses were designed in 1977 for the first time. These lenses, which are implanted on the iris, that is, the colored layer of the eye, these lenses have been improved and developed into the current modern design.

For who the Fakik lens is implemented? 

Today, there are various treatment methods that are used to correct refraction defects like miyopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism. Numerous methods like excimer laser (LASIK, LASEK, PRK), astigmatic keratotomy,  clear lens extraction, intra - corneal ring implantation can be added to the list. Among all these methods, frequantly, the most preferred method is the excimer laser (LASIK) method which is also known as laser treatment. However, in order to employ the laser treatment, a certain level of corneal thickness, a certain set up of corneal map and a certain level of sight strenght is requested. Excimer laser treatment cannot be the most appropriate treatment method for your eye in some certain cases. Therefore special alternative treatment methods have been developped for such eyes. One of the safest, most persistent and stabile treatment methods is the fakik lens method.

How does the assessment held before the Fakik lens operation ?

Your doctor will firstly assesst your sight level and determine the diopter value needed. After this assessment, the space of eye where the fakik lens will be implanted (frontal chamber deepth) is measured with special devices to determine wheter it appropriate or not.  After assessing the cell count in the cornea, it will be decided wether your eye is appropriate for fakik lens or not. 

After the implantation of Fakik lenses can any problem occur due to a laser operation or a cataract operation that may be required in future years ?

There is no inconvenience of fakik lens - implanted eyes contradict to laser or cataract operations. In cases where cataract developped in an eye with fakik lens, the lens will be removed and after the removal of cataractous lens a new lens will be implanted.

Before the operation...  

It is suggested that the administration of blood diluent medicines like aspirin, coumadine, etc shall be suspended a couple of days before the operation. The anesthetist doctor consults with patients to receive general anaesthesia on the fasting duration before the operation. Patients to receive local anaesthesia can have a light breakfast or lunch before the operation. 

The Operation procedure... 

Before going to the operation, a tranquilizer will be given to you in your room. The operation can be held under local anaesthesia. That is, your doctor will inject a narcotic drug to your eye's environs so that you shall not move your eye or feel pain. Usually, no pain is felt during the operation but a small touch feeling can be felt. Since the patients with local anaesthesia are awake durig the operation, they can communicate with the doctor. In some cases, the general anaesthesia can be applied to the patients upon the request of the doctor. 

After sterilizing your eye, a small apparatus which will keep your eyes open will be placed. A small laceration will be made in the corneal layer of your eye during the operation. Your doctor will inject a  viscoelastic substance behind the cornea, in front of the colored iris layer so as not to cause any damage to the cells behind the cornea (endothelium layer) when implanting the fakik lens. Through a small corneal laceration, the fakik lens is implanted in a way that it will not contact with your biological lens. The corneal layer is closed with small sutures. The duration of the operation is about 30 minutes.

How will I feel after the operation?

You will be taken to your room for rest after the operation. After having a rest for a couple of hours, its is allowable to go to your house. At the day of operation your eyes will be closed for all day. You may feel pain and irritaion as long as your eyes remain closed. This is normal. Taking pain killers is allowable. One day after the operation you will come for control and the eye - drops that you will use will be prescribed. The sutures in your eyes will be removed at the dates determined in controls. Your vision can further ameliorate after the removal of sutures. 

After the operation, especially in first days rubor, dilution and sensitivity to the light may develop in your eyes. Blurred vision may continue for a couple of weeks and oscillopsia and blurred vision may continue in the day. Such symptoms will expire in upcoming days as you use eye - drops. Absolutely do not smotheringly rub your eyes and pay attention not to let water or soap to contact with your eyes. 

What are the risks of fakik lens operation ?

You will be free from using glasses after the operation. You will continue your life without glasses in front of your eyes. However, each sphere number and structure of each eye is unique. Therefore, no doctor can guarantee for 100 % that the eye will obtain a 20 / 20 vision strenght. After the operation, like all other people, you will be still under the risk of cataract. Rarely, it is possible to develop cataract in patients with Fakik IOL. The treatment of cataract is very easy and can be implemented in very short time. Like in all other surgical operations, there is risk a risk of infection but this is an extremely rare case.
